Grant was born in Ventura at the old Bard hospital. His parents were Grant Leslie Chaffee Sr. and Lucille Veronica Booth Chaffee. The Chaffee desendents came with Father Serra to help build the California missions. Dads great grandfather, Walter Scott Chaffee, established the first department store in California which was on the corner of Palm and Main. He was also the first major of Ventura. Dad joined the Navy at 17 and was assigned a corpsman of the 4th Marine Division where he landed on the Marshall Islands, Saipan, Mariana Islands, and Iwo Jima. He was wounded and awarded the Purple heart, Bronze star, bronze star medal attached with combat V, Pacific campaign ribbon with 3 stars, Presidential unit citation with 1 star and the WW11 Victory medal. He was discharged from the Navy as a Pharmacists Mate 2nd Class. After the war Grant went to school at Cal Poly SLO and UC Davis. During this time he married his high school sweetheart, Patricia Waldron. From this union they had a son Scott and a daughter Sharon. Dad worked the family ranch for several years until it was sold. He then ventured to a different profession--real estate broker until his mid 80s. Dads other love was fishing the Owens River and dove hunting. Every family vacation took him to the high sierras and every hunt was accompanied by his faithful dogs, Tony and Ricky. He is survived by his son Scott Chaffee, daughter Sharon Ferro (Mike) grandchildren Shannon Reza (Ron), Sydney Reza, Jodi Belote (Sam), Jeremy, Lindsay and Brittney Ferro. He also leaves behind sister-in-laws Alicia Chaffee and JoAnn Peters, nephew Terry Chaffee and several other nieces and nephews. Funeral services are at Ivy Lawn Cemetery Tuesday April 20, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Ventura Historical Museum and the Humane Society. Grant Leslie Chaffee Jr. was born Feb. 23, 1925 and departed this life on April 15, 2010 to be reunited with his beloved wife, Patricia.
