Lt. Col. Virgil Martin Money (USAF Retired) died on June 11 in Camarillo of complications from esophageal cancer.

Virgil was born in 1929 in Mt. Airy, N.C., to Mr. and Mrs. Henry E. Money, Sr. His parents and three brothers predeceased him. Virgil graduated from Mt. Airy High School in 1947 and attended Elon University before enlisting in the Air Force in 1950. He was an airman, trained as a radar mechanic before attending Officer Candidate School and becoming 2nd Lieutenant in December 1953. He attended the University of Illinois graduating with a B.S. in electrical engineering in August 1962. His overseas assignments included Korea and two tours in Germany.

Upon retirement he attended law school in the San Fernando Valley. Stateside assignments included Tactical Air Command, Air Defense Command, Communications Command, and Defense Communication Agency. Prior to military service, Virgil worked in the coal mines of Welch and Gary, W. Va., on the engineering crew. He was an Eagle Scout, Master Mason, York Rite Mason and Shriner, being a member for over 50 years. His military decorations and awards include the United States of America Meritorious Service Award, the Department Commendation Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal and Foreign Service Award, Germany Army Occupational Medal, and National Defense Service Medal.

Virgil is survived by his wife, Jeanne-Marie, of 56 years; two daughters, Reverend Doctor Deborah Conner and husband Steve of Davidson, N.C., and Cathryn Daniero and husband Robert of Lake Sherwood, Calif.; grandsons, Jackson Conner of Carthedge, Mo., and Austin Conner and wife Jessica of Banner Elk, N.C.; nephew, Richard Money and wife Debbie of Panama City, Fla.; and numerous cousins and many good friends.

He was an Elder in the Presbyterian Church, U.S.A. and served at First Presbyterian Church in Oxnard.

A funeral service was held on Monday, June 14, 2010 at the Griffin Family Funeral Chapel in Camarillo. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery.
